Musical toys can certainly become irritating after a while, either playing the same monotones electronic tune over and over again, usually not being allowed even to play the fully ditty, but restarting the first bar over and over again as your darling little one keeps pressing that exciting button. The alternative is that the delightful chorus is being composed and performed by none other than your own dear sweetheart of a cherub. It was so kind of his aunt to buy him that drum set for Christmas wasn't it?
The problem is, though, that music, and musical toys, are very important to the development of a child. Music has so many beneficial factors, and many more that we can only hint at but cannot yet define why they have such an effect.
As a case in point, there have been many studies lately which demonstrate that listening to Mozart for an hour or so before sitting a test or exam will actually improve your analytical and logical skills, improving performances in maths and science subjects. Quite why this is so is hard to say.
Some argue that a spark of the genius of Mozart is carried in the notes, almost like a code that reaches straight into our brain and wakes it up; others suggest that it is merely the process of relaxing to music that calms the mind and allows us to approach analytical tasks more calmly and rationally.
Who can, say? But no matter which camp you feel yourself in, it is certainly not possible to question the validity of the results.
As a small child, music has an immediate effect.
Most children love dancing to music, even if they have never seen anyone else do it.
Moving to the rhythm, albeit in their own interpretation of rhythm, babies and toddlers will rock, clap or stomp away to a tune, almost as though compelled.
This certainly is fascinating, as there is no other creature that responds to music in the same way.
As well as listening to music, playing it themselves is also something which, if nothing else, makes small children very happy. They have no other real voice, as they can't speak, or at least not in a way that gets their message across, but by bashing out notes or beats they can become vocal, in their own way, and this is important as a way of allowing the child to express themselves, and identify themselves as an individual.
The rhythm and beats of music are definitely mathematical in nature, and this can certainly help to stimulate a child's brain and allow them to think in beats, rhythms, groups of notes and when they start to learn to count, walk, run and play games, a sense of rhythm, and a sense of logic are all critically important.
Who knows just how much benefit music is to a growing child? Just don't be too quick to blame his auntie.
She just might have tapped in to his genius.

Legal But Lethal - Cough Medicine Abuse in Teens
An ingredient found in many cough and cold remedies is finding its way into the hands of teens intent on using it to get what is described as a cheap dissociative high.
Dextromethorphan (DXM) - a synthetic ingredient found in more than 125 products including Vicks Nyquil LiquiCaps and Dimetapp DM - is increasingly being misused by teens with ready access to what is a legal drug available without prescription.
"When abused, dextromethorphan takes on qualities of a dissociative drug," the Canadian Council on Drug Abuse explains in literature to parents and others. "This means that it produces feelings of detachment in a person, as well as distorting a person's perception of sight and sound.
" A 2008 study found that one in 10 American teenagers has used products with DXM to get high, making it more popular in that age group than cocaine, ecstasy, LSD, and meth.
And although DXM products are considered safe when taken as recommended, high doses can cause side effects that include blurred vision, numbness, heart attack, confusion, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, and poor coordination. Longer-term effects are not fully known but are believed to include depression, liver problems, psychosis, and learning and memory problems.
What Can Parents Do? Start by talking to your teen about the dangers of abuse and the fact that over-the-counter medications are as dangerous as street drugs.
Experts like Celebrity Rehab's Dr.
Drew Pinsky say parents need to include cough medicine abuse in drug-abuse conversations with their kids.
"Make sure they understand you do not approve of any sort of substance abuse behavior and that they understand the risks of medicine abuse," Pinsky is quoted as saying.

Crash Proof Your Teen
Statistics show that as many as 40% of teens get in some kind of accident during their first year of driving.
These range from fender benders to cars that are totaled. Each year over 5,000 teens are killed in car accidents, and hundreds of thousands are injured.
So, what can you do to crash proof your teens? Consider the following: 1. Start by teaching them right.
The more supervised driving they have, the better chance they have of being a good driver.
Once they are awarded their license, and you are no longer required to be in the car while they drive, the opportunity to teach them good road driving is gone.
You can't just rely on the driver's education system and other driving programs to teach your child to drive.
They need to practice, and the best way to do that is to drive with you. The more practice they get with a supervising adult, the better chance they have at avoiding crashes, and becoming a safe driver rather than a road hazard.

Take advantage of the "learners permit" stage. This is a stage where you have to drive with them, and they are looking to learn.
So, optimize it by giving them plenty of opportunities to drive, and in plenty of different circumstances.
Let them drive on back roads and parking lots when starting, then bump them up to more congested roads.
Give them a chance to drive at night, or in the morning when there is some fog.
Let them merge onto the highway, and practice safe driving in the rain.
Basically, during this stage, try to replicate every possible driving scenario they will face on their own, but with you in the car. This way you can teach them the right way to handle these situations, and let them learn right from the beginning, so that you do not have to try and re-teach them later. That never works well.

Beyond this, set rules for things like yellow traffic lights, you don't speed through them, you stop.
Make sure they know not to talk on their phone, adjust mirrors, or change the radio or CDs when driving.
Do that before, or pull to the side of the road when necessary.

People had to learn enough to become technicians to repair computers; then they had to learn how to build them.
For the longest time it looked as though I had worried needlessly.
But now, it looks as though computers are replacing people.
Prices have come down so much and they keep coming down.
Technology keeps being replaced at warp speed and people are now more inclined to buy a new computer than to have the old one repaired.
So, how much work will technicians of the future have if people find it cheaper to replace their computers than to have them repaired? I remember when my first laptop broke, I took it to a technician to repair it.
The cost was enormous but I figured it would be cheaper than having to replace it. The technician spent a lot of hours trying to get it to work, and it did work, for a few weeks.
And then I witnessed its death throes and I had to dump it.
Nothing was salvageable.
I had to buy a new laptop.
When I went to replace it, four years later, the price was a third of what I had paid.
And when I handed my accountant the receipts I had for the repairs that year, I discovered that I had paid more for the repairs than what I paid to buy a new laptop. At that point, I made a decision to take out a four-year, on site, warranty for any new computers that I bought in the future and not to spend money on repairs after the warranty expired. It paid off royally.
During the four years, the company has had to replace my monitors, my hard drives, my keyboards, and once, even my computer itself. And not once has the cost of all those warranties equaled the cost of the repairs for the first laptop.
This brings me back to the kind of things that computer operated robots can now do to replace humans.
They can turn on your oven and start cooking your dinner.
They can turn on your house lights to welcome you home.
They can clean a house, shop for you online, and keep track of your expenses.
They can book airline flights and make hotel reservations.
They can even be programmed to have conversations with you.
One of the advances in computer technology that is a godsend to the elderly and people who are bedridden or who just can't move around too quickly, is the wireless 2-way intercom system with video for your house.
It comes with a camera door unit and a portable hand-held LCD display unit that lets you see who is at the door.

In the old days, a bookkeeper would come in to a small business once a month and tally everything up so that everything would be ready to turn over to an accountant at the end of the year.
Now, QuickBooks takes the place of a bookkeeper. Inventory used to be done manually.
Now, computers store the information as an item is sold. It tells the owner what items are in stock and what needs to be ordered. The only thing I haven't seen computers do is sweep the floors, dust the shelves, arrange creative window displays, and stock the shelves with new merchandise.
But that's probably coming in the not too distant future.
When I see how quickly new technology replaces old technology and how quickly electronic gadgets come down in price because it's cheaper to manufacture nowadays, it's no wonder that people are buying new equipment rather than repairing them.

Struggle and Triumph Over Autism
My oldest son was diagnosed at 18 months with "moderately severe autism." At the time, 1998, only 1 in 10,000 children were diagnosed autistic. Information was limited and treatments were in their infancy.
The common assumption on the part of "experts" was that autistic children could not feel or express love, would never be able to communicate meaningfully or live independently.
The advice was to "do the best we could" and "get on with our lives.
" If you are a parent, you know that advice did NOT sit well with me! No way was my child going to spend his life lining up toy cars, flapping like a bird and struggling to make the most basic requests known.
I made the decision that while my child might be suffering from Autism, he would NO BE CONTROLLED BY IT! This was the biggest challenge I had faced in my life and I was gearing up for battle. It was all out war! I spent hours and hours searching the internet for anything related to autism.
I learned everything I possibly could.
I became an expert in the field. I learned about various symptoms, tests, and treatments.
To say I was overwhelmed would be an understatement, however there was no time to freeze from over-load. Autism is a quicksand.
If you are not actively pulling your child out of the pit, you child will be pulled into it.
I was determined to pull my son out.

and fast! The next 4 years were a blur of constant prayer, therapy sessions, doctor appointments and more therapy. On top of the 50 hours a week of therapy, I put my son on a strict Gluten and Casein free diet.
This was years before gluten-free was in vogue so I spent a lot of time cooking from scratch and a lot of money ordering special gf foods on-line.
Autism had literally taken over my every moment, every thought, every once of energy I had.
There was no down time.
No quiet moments.
If he was awake, he was in treatment and I was either leading it or supervising it. I was constantly exhausted.
But it was worth it! After four years of intensive therapies and treatment, my son was talking, making eye contact and even had a friend.
He gave great hugs, loved to read and be read to, played little league and adored Sponge Bob.
By everyone's standards he was "fine." But I knew He stilled struggled with certain autistic behaviors and I wouldn't rest until he was completely recovered.
Telling people your autistic son is "in recovery" is a radical statement, especially at that time. People around me urged me to "leave him alone" and "just relax. He's fine.
" But the war was not won yet and my son and I weren't done fighting.
Fast forward to today: My son is now 17 and graduating from High School in May.
I just paid his registration fee for college where he is planning to major in.

Looking back over these years, I see how strong the human spirit truly is, how resilient to wounds and injuries our hearts truly are, and how much we accomplish when we are absolutely convinced that we MUST.

Letter to My 15 Year-Old Self
Dear 15 year-old Tonia Jordan,
I know this sounds strange, but I know somewhere in your silly sci-fi mind, you're going to believe me: I'm you in 10 years. That's right - I'm writing this at the age of 25, and I have some advice for you.
First off, I want you to realize that High School is nothing.
Once you graduate, you'll never see those people again.
